Alcoholic hepatitis, unlike the other forms of hepatitis, is not viral, so it is not contagious. It can't be transmitted from person to person trough blood or blood products.
However, there are some risk factors that should be known:
- the main risk factor is the alcohol abuse which increases considerably the chances of developing a liver disease;
- It is proved that women are more likely to develop alcoholic hepatitis, even though they drink smaller amounts of alcohol and for shorter periods of time;
- Another factor is the race. It seems that alcoholic hepatitis incidence is more frequent in non-white population than in white population (t he nonwhite male rate of alcoholic hepatitis is 1.7 times the white male rate, 1.9 times the nonwhite female rate, and almost 4 times the white female rate);
The presence of other diseases (such as diabetes or one of the other types of hepatitis) can cause a sooner occurrence of alcoholic hepatitis.
