Hepatitis C Transmission
Ways of transmission
The infection with hepatitis C virus occurs when infected blood enters the body of a not infected person. It is also possible to be transmitted trough unprotected (without a latex barrier) sex - but it's uncommon and rarely from an infected mother to her baby during birth.
There are several groups that have a higher risk of being/getting infected with hepatitis B virus:
- Persons who received multiple transfusions of blood, blood products or solid organ transplants;
- Persons who suffer from hemophilia (almost 60% from all the cases)
- Infants born to infected mothers (maximum of 8% of the infected persons);
- Users of the injection drugs (8 - 10% from all cases);
- Persons who have household contacts of chronically infected persons;
- Persons that work or are incarcerated in a prison;
- Although hepatitis C virus is rarely transmitted during sex, persons having sex with multiple partners or with an infected steady partner may be at increased risk of HCV infection.
